What are GranuFlo® and NaturaLyte®?
GranuFlo and NaturaLyte are commonly used kidney dialysis products manufactured by Fresenius Medical Care North America. Both products have been linked to causing alkalosis, a condition associated with a substantial increase in cardiovascular death and catastrophic injuries in patients undergoing dialysis treatment.
Fresenius Medical Care North America
Fresenius Medical Care North America, the manufacturer of GranuFlo and NaturaLyte, is the largest dialysis services and products company in both the United States and the World. Fresenius treats more than 1 out of every 3 dialysis patients in the U.S. at over 1,800 of its own kidney dialysis clinics, and is a leading supplier of products used by the dialysis clinics it does not own. Fresenius Medical Care’s 2010 Revenues exceeded $12 billion.
Fresenius Medical Care knew about the risks associated with GranuFlo and NaturaLyte as early as 2010 when the company circulated an internal memo discussing these risks. Yet Fresenius did not bother to warn consumers or the FDA. In fact, the FDA did not learn of GranuFlo’s dangers until the Fresenius document was anonymously leaked to the Agency. Finally, in March of 2012, over a year after first learning of the risks associated with GranuFlo and NaturaLyte products, Fresenius issued an “urgent product notification” highlighting the increased risk of catastrophic cardiovascular injuries associated with GranuFlo.
